Aims:

The aim of this module is to provide an opportunity for the Delegate to tackle an engineering problem in a manufacturing environment and, subsequently to produce a technical dissertation and to defend his/her work.

Learning Objectives:

On successful completion of this module delegates will have gained experience in:

  • applying to engineering problems the knowledge gained from the taught element of the programme
  • planning and managing a theoretical or experimental project
  • critically evaluating and analysing theoretical and/or experimental data
  • application of the scientific method
  • marshalling ideas and developing reliable coherent arguments
  • preparation of a written report and defence of their work

Assessment:

  • Initial Report 10%
  • Dissertation and viva voce examination 90%

Background to the Module:

The MSc Project is an integral and important part of the MSc programme of study. It entails 600 hours of notional study time spread over, typically, 9 months of study and work, normally carried out in the Delegates place of work.

Pre-Requisite Knowledge:

This module may only be undertaken when eight taught modules have been successfully undertaken. It is intended to integrate the knowledge gained by the Delegate by permitting him/her to apply the new knowledge to a real engineering problem.
